Evidence Law 101 edition by Dr Vook PhD Charles River Editors Literature Fiction eBooks

This book on evidence law is a little poorly written in places, but its brevity and balance make up for that. If your time is extremely limited, and you want and/or need only a cursory overview, this book is quite helpful. I have purchased multiple books by Vook and benefited from getting the gist of huge legal topics quickly. You can find higher quality treatments, sure, and you should go deeper with those depending on your purposes. But you can't find a more succinct set of legal primers than these.

Evidence Law 101 edition by Dr Vook PhD Charles River Editors Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

As the other reviewer said, it is a nice overview for law students and otherwise into the world of Evidence. Well worth the 99 cents, I believe. On the other hand, there are a number of grammatical errors that make me wonder exactly how hard these editors worked proofreading.

I also wish it was just a little more thorough. It can be read in under an hour, which gives me a nice roadmap to the material but no real depth. If it cost more than $.99, I would not buy it again.
I assume that the vast majority of people who are interested in this are law students. For them, I can give a qualified recommendation of this little guide. Indeed, I would say that this guide will work well if read before the course. It deals with the general themes of criminal law (e.g., admissibility and relevance, hearsay, and character evidence) but hardly in the detail necessary for success in class discussions, on exams, or, indeed, in the courtroom. In this sense, it is, I think, truly good for a pre-course introduction to the material. Having an idea where the course will go, what the major issues will be, and how those issues are generally interpreted can truly help a law-school student, especially with a subject that gets as complicated as evidence does.
"Hate" is a strong word, and I don't hate this e-book. But after reading through it, I can't imagine what help it would be to an actual law student. If the layman wants to familiarize him or herself with some very surface concepts in order to b.s. their friends about why their favorite lawyer TV show gets it wrong, then MAYBE this will be good for that.

Or maybe a person who's trying to DIY their own case might think this is helpful. Beware it is not.

I really don't know who this is supposed to be written for. What audience is the writer trying to reach? It's not useful for law students (and certainly not for lawyers); it's not really useful for the layman; and it's not useful for the hopeful DIY individual either.

Oh well, at least it was just a buck. Still, I would have rather given that buck to the homeless guy on the freeway offramp.
Basically, evidence is only admissible if it relevant. Evidence is relevant if it has any tendency to make a material fact more probable or less probable than would be the case without the evidence.
This book discusses the several limitations on the admissibility of relevant evidence. Evidence of a person's character, reputation, habits, and opinions will often be relevant, but the admissibility of this evidence is strictly governed by the Federal Rules of Evidence, which most states' rules of evidence have copied. The different kinds of evidence including hearsay and the rules governing their admissibility form the foundations of evidence law which are discussed throughout this book.
For example, " a photograph of a crime scene displaying a lot of blood or a dead body will be relevant, as proof of a murder. However, a grisly photograph will also very likely inflame the jury, who will look to hold someone responsible for what they saw. Is the photograph's probative value substantially outweighed by its unfair prejudice?"
My favourite section is the part on impeachment which is used as a way of attacking an opposing party's or witness' credibility . Credibility is defined as whether a witness is believable, specifically in reference to their honesty, memory, and perception of events. There are several methods to impeach a witness, including prior inconsistent statements, bias, motive, interest, reputation, and deficient perception.
Legal jargon is simplified and made easy to understand by this author.
This book on evidence law is a little poorly written in places, but its brevity and balance make up for that.
